The plates
Two county atlases carry 140 named subjects between them, on 26 plates. The 1874 volume is engraved and holds no face at all: every view in it is a house, a farm or a works, named for the person who owned it. The 1893 volume is photographic, and most of the faces this county has are on its plates.
The plate is the unit here, whole and uncropped, because a plate has a leaf number and a subject does not. The names under each one are the book's own, taken from its contents or its index rather than read off the picture.
